Enjoy the casual elegance of a bygone era. Built in the 1880s, the THE MAIN HOUSE has been lovingly restored to create a luxurious five bedroom home in a private and tranquil setting. Comfortable rooms, shaded verandahs, vast gardens make the house a great place to make your own for relaxation and exploration. Where rugged beauty and ultimate luxury rub shoulders!

You will not find any Keep Out signs here - you are welcome to roam and explore at will: cut a few flowers from the borders and some salad leaves from the kitchen garden, grab some lemons for your crepes from one of the trees. It is all yours and yours alone!

THE MAIN HOUSE has four spacious master suites and a playful bunk room that are all beautifully finished and thoughtfully furnished with the crispest of linens, comfortable reading nooks and adjustable lighting.

Key Features of this 557 sq meter area is the heated swimming pool and spa pool, flood lit tennis court, exercise gym, extensive gardens, expansive deck with barbecue, wireless internet access, digital television, fully equipped gourmet kitchen, laundry facilities, five ensuite bathrooms, and access to a private helipad.

All suites have en suite bathrooms, thermostatic controllers and plenty of storage space. Three of the master suites have kingsize beds and verandahs. The fourth master suite can be set up with a kingsize bed or with twin singles. The fifth bedroom is all about fun: sleeping a maximum of six people, it has a set of bunks as well as two double beds, plus a surprise that will delight visitors both old and young – a secret staircase that leads down to the kitchen via the butler’s pantry!

The heart of the THE MAIN HOUSE is undoubtedly the large kitchen, with its farmhouse table and views out to the lawns and kitchen garden beyond. Fully stocked with delicious breakfast provisions and pantry supplies plus all the appliances, kitchenware and utensils you might need. The kitchen leads through to the warm and spacious drawing room and library, where you can choose to get cosy in front of the fire or enjoy the views through the French doors to the gardens and the bay glinting through the trees. The elegant dining room seats 12 and features original Kauri furniture.

Meander through the fifteen acres of historic gardens around THE MAIN HOUSE and discover an array of fascinating botanical features – the lush atmosphere of the restored Victorian fernery, the dappled shade of the long walk beside the bay, the structural simplicity of the parterre and the exuberance of the kitchen garden.

THE MAIN HOUSE has lovingly restored historic gardens with its box hedging, sweeping lawns, dry stone walls and English trees underplanted with daffodils. With a resurrected heritage orchard, simultaneously extending native and exotic plantings and developing new areas of interest. We invite you to share in the glorious tranquility of this special garden and we would be happy to arrange a tour of these heritage gardens for those who are interested in finding out more about it.

THE STABLES
If your party requires extra accommodation, it is possible to book THE STABLES in conjunction with THE MAIN HOUSE. This self contained and spacious loft apartment sleeps up to four. Opposite THE MAIN HOUSE these are the original stables, where the rich aroma of leather and hay that has permeated the aged timbers of the ground floor belies the presence of a spacious two bedroom luxury loft upstairs. The furniture and decor of this self contained accommodation complement the history and character of the building, while allowing you to relax in warm and contemporary comfort. Only available to parties staying at THE MAIN HOUSE, THE STABLES offers a perfect blend of privacy and proximity with one queen bedroom and one twin bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and Wifi access.

Pool and Amenities
You can do as little or as much as you like at THE MAIN HOUSE. The state of the art recreation facilities include an outdoor 20 metre heated swimming pool with lighting system, 40 degree spa pool, flood lit tennis court and top of the line gym equipment including treadmill, weights, exercycle and elliptical, and all weather changing rooms.

Location
Boasting 4,000 acres of dramatic coastal pasture, which is home to around 500 head of beef cattle and between 7,000 and 14,000 sheep, depending on the season. Priding themselves on sustainable farming practices and healthy livestock the aim is to breed the finest stock for the most delicious meat and best quality wool, and to provide world class accommodation with relaxed, Kiwi style informality. You are invited to roam the property, enjoy the views and get a feel for the experience of those early pioneers, even try your and hand and work on the land with  if you like - but please remember to close the gates behind you!

History
Hospitality and livestock breeding are deeply embedded in THE MAIN HOUSE history. In 1843, nearly a decade before the first immigrant settlement of Christchurch, Ebeneezer and Agnes Hay brought their family from Scotland to New Zealand. They established a farm, building their herd from just five cows to become a leading stockbreeder and one of the most prestigious operations in the country. In 1886, a storm destroyed the family’s original home and they were forced to decamp to the hotel they had built for their guests. The hotel remained their home and is now the THE MAIN HOUSE. On your visit, you will have the opportunity to find out more about the history and experience this very special part of the world for yourself.

Cuisine
Fresh and delicious local produce is a hallmark of a stay at THE MAIN HOUSE. Cuisine will be an experience to savour with whichever dining option you choose  – from a private chef dinner to cuisine created and delivered directly to your door for enjoyment at your leisure. Prior to your arrival, you will be sent out a simple form about special preferences and/or particular foods to avoid. Receiving this information with plenty of notice allows us to bespoke cater and ensure everything is seamless.

Farm to Table: Working closely with the gardeners and farm management with the changing seasons, the chefs are inspired by the freshest ingredients that arrive at the kitchen. The edible garden holds up to 50 different varieties of vegetables and herbs, hand select fruit from the heritage trees, source the desired cuts from their Angus beef and Romney sheep, forage the bay surrounds for wild edibles and operate within a 100km food footprint working closely with the producers to complete the experience that shapes the food that is cooked and presented each day.

We Create, You Serve: For a farm to table experience that will not compromise your privacy, the award winning chef will create a morning riser breakfast menu, a superb picnic lunch and a gourmet three course dinner and any dietaries or special cravings communicated in advance can be met. The meal will be delivered to your escape with easy to follow instructions allowing you to simply complete the finishing touches before enjoying some of this delicious local produce.

The Home Escape THE MAIN HOUSE Testimonials

Cannot believe how beautiful the views were

We had such a fab time. Weather was good for time of year but cannot believe how beautiful the views were from The Beach House. You have such a wonderful place. It was well equipped for our every needs and on our doorstep was beach restaurant & the hotel which were lovely & also 10 minute walk were The Horseshoe & The Anchor. We went in each one of them - all fantastic restaurants! Thank you so very much.

James - THE BEACH HOUSE

Decorated beautifully

We had a lovely time, the cottage is really well thought out and decorated beautifully. We stay a lot at Babington House and your cottage has a similar feel.
