 Lezignan-Corbieres I South France

Lézignan-Corbières [closest town] is a typical French town that has quite a lot to offer. There are many nice wineries, producing wonderful wines. You can visit many of them and taste some of their wines. "Chateau Grand Moulin" is a winery only 5 minutes walk away. In town you will find a good selection of restaurants from typical French to Vietnamese. Each Wednesday morning there is a regional market with lots of fresh produce, olives, cheeses and even freshly made Paella. In the heart of the old town is the 11th century church of Saint Félix de Gérone.

During the summer months the cultural centre "Maison Gibert" hosts free outdoor concerts each Thursday evening, and local artists showcase their art in the gallery. For classical music lovers there is the "Festival de Gaujac", with outdoor concerts in the garden of a Chateau.

Each Spring there is a 3 day fair called "Prom'aude" that showcases everything the region has to offer, from winemakers, olive farmers, cheese makers to local artisans, working with iron and much more. It is a popular fair where people get together tasting all the local delicacies and meet with friends, listening to music.

On June 21st everyone in France celebrates music with the "Fete de la Musique", so you will find many restaurants that have live music that day. In August there is a 3 day festival in the centre of town, with many live bands, that put up impressive shows at the centre stage. There is also a Movie Theatre in town, that sometimes shows movies in English [marked as VOST]. There is also a good park which is great for children with ducks, geese and peacocks and a little play area. Lézignan-Corbières also has a nice forest " La Pinede" where you can enjoy some wonderful nature walks.

Grocery Shopping I South France

In Montlaur there is Vival - a good little convenience store that sells a full range of necessities as well as fresh bread and croissants. It is possible to order just about anything from them that you can get in a Casino supermarket. Ask Philippe the propriéteur by Tuesday morning and you should have it by the Thursday! The shop is just behind the church and is open daily from 7-12 and 3.30-7.30 except on Sundays when it is open only in the morning. Phone +33 [0]4 68 24 97 14

There is also an excellent butcher just down from the church. He can also supply you with excellent poultry.

The closest market town is in Lezignan-Corbières and there is an Intermarché as well as good butchers, patisseries and green grocers in the town. Across the road from the Intermarché is Maison Bertrand, the best butcher in the area. On Wednesday mornings there is an excellent market in the centre of town.

Beaches | South France

The best beaches are at La Franqui and Leucate Village, about 45 minutes form THE property. Take the péage to Narbonne, head toward Barcelona and then leave at exit 40. At Leucate there is a charming beach restaurant called Les Pilotis. It is between Porte Leucate and Leucate Plage. Take the exit from the route between the two sign posted ‘conchylicole’ then wind round under the bridge toward the sea. It has a great menu and vibe and rents nice sunbeds. T +33 [0]6 26 34 17 86

La Franqui was one of the original seaside resorts in the Aude department, having a great location at the foot of a cliff and a large 8km sandy beach that reaches out to meet the even larger sandy beach at Port la Nouvelle. It is known for its wind and has established itself as the kitesurfing and windsurfing resort of the region. Very popular with wind surfers, La Franqui's beach is large and wide, with fine sand. There are two beaches - one just in front of a lovely village and one further up the coast that is bordered by the sea on one side, and the etang [inland lake] on the other. The result is a long strip of 2 sided beach. It is windy here [thus the windsurfers with pretty surroundings and relaxed, friendly restaurants.

The hillsides are covered with amazing walking trails. These are marked on the Série Bleue map on the kitchen bookshelf. There is a great climb to an old church on the shoulder of the Montagne d’Alaric behind the house. Drive down the gorge de Congoustes and leave your car at the bottom. You will see a trail that goes up through the scree. The entrance to which is indicated with a red and white striped marking. It is a 45 minute hike up and the views are stunning. To continue up to the top takes about another hour. There are guides at the house on the local hikes.

Grotte de Limousis
The history of Grotte de Limousis goes back to the mists of time. It was a shelter under the rock used by both prehistoric men and Cave Bears. It has always been a refuge for men. The first chamber in this cave is as tall as the Eiffel Tower and is over 1,600,000 m3. There are no stairs to climb so it is suitable for all ages both young and old. You can also view a great number of traces of bears claws bearing testimony to the presence of bears here some 12,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic, the period corresponding to the last great Ice Age.

Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine
2008 was not only the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the Gouffre Géant de Cabrespine but also the 20th anniversary of its opening to the public but the history of the cave does not come down to these two dates. Since time immemorial, the history of Gaougnas has been connected with the history of men of La Clamoux as vestiges discovered in the first chambers of the subterranean system bear testimony to the long occupation of the site which would date back to the Bronze Age.
