For something less beery and more wine-focused, join the locals at Niki's Wine Bar in the Montana Hotel on St Anton's main pedestrianised street. Nikolaus, the owner of the hotel, is a qualified wine buff and will share his knowledge with you over informal tastings. Bodega is also good for wine lovers, as is the modern wine bar Murrmel, which plays live music upstairs during après hours and has become the hot place to party in town. As well as the wine bar upstairs, there's a clubbing area downstairs, which has a late licence and regularly hosts guest DJs and themed party nights. The bar in the St Antonerhof hotel is cosy, welcoming and makes great cocktails.

The Austrian tapas – small portions of traditional local dishes – served in the chic bar are ideal for après snacking while more substantial dishes are served in the à la carte restaurant in the evening.

Vinzenz | St Anton

Named after Vinzenz Klimmer, the executive chef at the Mooser Hotel, Vinzenz offers one of the best dining experiences in St Anton. Located in the eaves of a former dairy and cowshed, reclaimed timber beams frame floor-to-ceiling windows looking down across St Anton. The New York-style bar backs onto the infamous MooserWirt while chefs beaver away beside it in a state-of-the-art open kitchen, preparing sophisticated contemporary cuisine. New last season, lunch can also be enjoyed at Vinzenz – although be prepared for blasts of the MooserWirt music each time the bar door opens!

Rodelalm | St Anton

The Rodelalm and Rodelstall (toboggan hut and barn) are rustic old mountain huts, which serve Tyrolean classics with bags of atmosphere on the side. Located at the base of the toboggan run, the Alm is open from 11am until the Alber family "hop on a toboggan and go home" (usually around 5.30pm), while the Stall opens for dinner from 6pm. The Alm is a great spot for hearty lunches on the sunny terrace and the Stall is particularly popular on Tuesday and Thursday evenings when there's night-time tobogganing. Where: Skiers left before the top of the Fang chairlift, as you ski from Gampen to Nasserein.

 Rendl | St Anton

The Rendl Restaurant and its large sun terrace, known as Rendl Beach (which has its own Beach Bar and menu), is almost a reason in itself to ski on Rendl. Delicious burgers, grilled meats and seafood, and towering stir fries made with fresh, local produce are whipped up in front of you in the gleaming open kitchen. With its contemporary glass, concrete and wooden interiors, the building is bright and airy yet, thanks to traditional ceramic ovens, cosy and welcoming. This is probably the best self-service restaurant in the St Anton am Arlberg ski area.

Verwallstube | St Anton

St Anton's most sophisticated (and expensive) mountain restaurant, the Verwallstube, serves startlingly good bouillabaisse, rich truffle pasta and locally-sourced game in refined yet unpretentious surroundings. Either treat yourself to lunch here, on the sunny terrace if weather allows, or save the culinary delights of Austrian head chef Bernhard Neuhold for a candlelit dinner – the Galzig gondola runs on Thursday evenings especially to bring guests up to the restaurant.
