St. Anton

St Anton is rated among the top five resorts in the Alps for very good reason: located in Austria’s Arlberg region, one of Europe’s snowiest areas (remember the place where everybody was gleefully snowed in a couple of years ago), it boasts 340km of pistes, 200km of off-piste itineraries and over 55km² of challenging off-piste terrain. In addition, it has a highly efficient lift system (97 lifts) and an attractive town bursting with stylish hotels, chalets and restaurants.

Located within two hours' drive of three international airports and with a railway station at its heart, the resort is easy to reach and, once there, small enough to navigate. Furthermore, St Anton packs some serious heritage – it's the birthplace of the "Father of Modern Skiing", Johann ‘Hannes’ Schneider, who conceived the Arlberg technique of downhill skiing and tuition as we know it today, as well as being the spiritual home of après, thanks to the infamous MooserWirt and Krazy Kanguruh bars.

Live music | St. Anton

Live music | St. Anton

There's invariably an acoustic band playing at Underground on the Piste and a DJ spinning at Basecamp. Later in the evening, head for Murrmel or Piccadilly and Postkeller [reopening this December after a prolonged closure and extensive renovation], two perennial St Anton favourites, which always offer cheesy tunes and dancing. The chilled out Kandahar sometimes hosts bands but generally sticks to its winning Buddah Bar-style soundtrack, staying open until the last guests leave, often not before 4am. A new favourite in town is the Hells Club [open from 8pm Wednesday to Sunday], located in the Hotel Tyrol, a late night bar and disco with quirky interiors.

For a truly remarkable live music après experience, the MooserWirt hosts the RTL2 Après-Ski Hits event each winter in mid-December. Filmed by the major European TV channel RTL2, the event sees international DJs, bands and dancers perform the most popular hits of the year as well as hot new albums. Admission is free.

Shopping | St. Anton

The truth is It might take a few more years for St Anton's luxury makeover to spawn a better shopping experience for the non ski-obsessed: the vast majority of retail outlets in town are ski and snowboard shops and boutiques for high-end winter wear brands such as Arc'teryx and Peak Performance. Several of the ski shops are owned by the local Alber family [sport-alber.com] and offer a superb selection of skis and snowboards for purchase and rent, winter clothing and equipment to suit most budgets [although luxury is better catered for than budget]. The Alber Sport Freeride store by the Galzig lift has an impressive collection of freeride and park equipment, from skis and boots to avalanche transceivers and airbag packs.

Childcare

Some UK ski operators include childcare and/or ski tuition in their packages or work with local professionals to arrange it for you. British family ski specialist Esprit Ski, for example, offers its guests flexible ski tuition and childcare options. The Arlberg Ski School not only offers ski and snowboard tuition for children from three years but also operates a Kindergarten for children from two and a half, with midday supervision available upon request.

Cross Country Skiing | St. Anton

St. Anton am Arlberg is now also considered a destination for cross-country skiers. Tyrol awarded the 40-kilometre-long network of trails the quality seal for cross-country skiing.
Essential criteria for the award were the high guarantee of snow, good designation of routes, the number and length of cross-country trails with differing levels of difficulty. The approximately 40-kilometre-long cross-country network offers many comfortable but also more athletically challenging types of route, thus satisfying a variety of levels.
